The Archbishop of New Orleans received the pallium from Pope Leo XIV. Archbishop James Checchio received the pallium along with 54 Metropolitan archbishops. Of those archbishops, four were from the United States and were appointed in the past year. According to the Archdiocese of New Orleans, the Pallium Mass, held annually on the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, was celebrated in St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. The pallium is a circular band made of soft white wool that is worn over an archbishop’s shoulders during important Masses. It has two woolen strips that hang down: one in the front and one in the back, and features six black crosses with metal pins that represent the nails of the cross, according to a statement issued by the archdiocese. “The ends of the hanging strips are covered in black cloth, making them look like the legs of a lamb. This helps us remember Jesus, the Lamb of God, and the gentle care a bishop should show to the people entrusted to him,” the archdiocese said, stating church tradition. Only the sitting archbishop or the pope can wear a pallium.
