LINN COUNTY, Iowa (KCRG) – The Linn County Board of Supervisors will decide at their meeting on Wednesday whether to place a moratorium on new applications for data centers.
According to the resolution, the concerns around the creation of new data centers are with the amount of electrical and water consumption, as well as the potential long-term impacts.
If allowed to go into effect, the resolution would immediately establish a moratorium on new applications until January 1, 2028. At that time, the board may choose to opt to continue the moratorium.
According to the resolution, an area data center project was adopted before any “substantial additional technical information and regional planning discussions” were made available.
There is currently talks of a proposed Google data center near the former Duane Arnold Power Plant.
Should the moratorium be put in place, the board says they will use that time to evaluate and gain additional information until applications are accepted again.
