So I’ve just adopted this beauty and am looking for a new name for him. Any suggestions are welcome.

  1. Go for a 2 syllable name because we tend to say those softer than 1 syllable words.

1 syllable words are useful for teaching him command words such as sit, stop, stay, heel, go etc. A stern tone lent to these 1 syllable words can be differentiated by dogs (once trained) from longer words spoken softer.

I got that from the famous Barbara Woodhouse decades ago & I find it works.

A few years back when a friend got a puppy (1st ever dog in his life), whenever he was trying to train the pup he would use his 1 syllable name, Max. Instead of saying stop he would say the name. Instead of saying heel he would say the name, etc. Then he couldn’t figure out why his pup was not making progress like the others at the doggy behavioural school. His partner asked me to accompany them to one of the lessons & see if I could give any advice. After the lesson I advised him to stop using the puppy’s name as a command word. He doesn’t understand the difference between that and being called over, so the commands are not being trained into him.

I also gave feedback on the fact that this ‘behavioural school’ did not observe & put a stop to him using the pup’s name as a command word. The schools who know what they’re doing would know that training the human forms as much a part of the lesson as training the dog.

Sorry for going on a rant. Go for a 2 syllable name, keep 1 syllable words for commands.

  2. Awww cutie.

He looks just like the black lab from the old movie ”The Dambusters”.

You should name him after that dog.
