Social Democrats TD Gary Gannon forced to repay over €1,000 in expenses after recording the lowest attendance of any TD last year This was despite the Dáil sitting in his own constituency for much of the year. https://t.co/DYNcCqgDWS

  1. Lol, i never thought he seemed overly bright, but I thought he might at least be hard-working.

Does he have any excuse? I can only read the start of the article.

  2. One of the greatest spoofers in the 33rd Dáil. He’s at nothing in his constituency either, it’s a certainty that Sinn Fein will take his seat.

  3. Most modern politicians are only good for click bait soundbites, mostly on which wishy washy emotive issues that they oversimplify. With the Dail pension he is set for life. The worst thing is that when he stands for election again his idiotic constituents will probably vote for him.

  4. Checked his Instagram. He’s on holidays in Italy now. The dáil doesn’t break for the summer for another few weeks. His instagram is full of him at social events & overseas, or if he’s not posted it himself, you can see (I assume it’s his gf) has tagged him at all sorts of places, including a reception at the British ambassador’s residence for a Jubilee celebration. He’s taking the piss.

  5. It’s crazy to think that if the rest of us admitted to stealing a thousand euro what the result would be.

TDs get a slap on the wrist when the rest of us would (rightly) get a conviction.

  6. I’d say he’s resigned himself to the fact that he’s going to lose his seat to Mary Lou’s running mate next time

  7. I kind of liked the idea of supporting this party as a bit of an alternative to the other options but it is amazing how one person can really fuck up a party’s image and even though it is a relatively small amount/issue in the grand scheme of things I would imagine it would put a lot of people off. Not something a small party can afford to be doing.

  8. How does it work? Are they given the expenses and then have to reimburse if they don’t attend or what? Not a great look to be the worst attendee. Who are the best?

  9. Social Democrats are nothing but a bunch of fucking layabouts , that’s what they were before they were elected , why would they change when elected

  10. I don’t know about Gary Gannon but I think to be fair attendance in the Dail doesn’t equal work put in.

Now having said that claiming expenses for being there when you are not is totally out of order. No defending that.

TD’s are on call 24/7 and generally work 24/7. I know in my own constituency there’s a few TD’s are barely ever in the Dail and it’s most definitely not a reflection on their work.

There is this idea of them having 3 months holidays because the Dail isn’t sitting but they are still going through that 24/7 grind regardless.

If you actually take time to watch the Dail in session, outside of leaders questions and the like, the place is usually mostly empty.

The big issue with TD’s in Ireland is that they are glorified councillors. Elected to a national position but most of them spend their time on issues that are technically within a councillors remit.

  11. If he doesn’t lose his seat in the next election I’ll be raging. I like the soc dems but he’s lazy and arrogant, he doesn’t deserve a seat no matter what his party is. He does the bare minimum and the rest of his time is spent going away with his girlfriend on travels.

Irrelevant as well but his Instagram makes me cringe. It’s as if he’s trying to be a celebrity/show off his life than actually be a TD.

  12. He says it’s because he forgot the fob to clock in, but that he was there a lot more than this indicates. He says the official record verifies that. F*ck knows if that’s true, but thats his story at the moment anyways
