Tesla is preparing to begin production of its Optimus humanoid robot at the Fremont factory this summer, converting former Model S and Model X assembly lines for the new platform.

CEO Elon Musk has described the Optimus Humanoid Robot as potentially the “biggest product ever,” with ambitions for millions of units capable of performing household chores, factory work, and assisting with elder care.

A recent X post by Tesla investor account @Teslaconomics noted the robot’s envisioned role, stating, “Optimus be the greatest product EVER created. It will be the first tool that can physically help us with almost anything… imagine having a robot that can cook dinner, clean the house, carry groceries, help care for elderly family members, assist people with disabilities, work dangerous jobs…”

The July 1, 2026, post, which included a collage of conceptual images depicting Optimus in everyday scenarios, has drawn significant engagement.

Production Timeline and Capabilities

According to updates from Tesla’s Q1 2026 earnings call and subsequent statements, pilot production of Optimus is slated to start in late July or August 2026 at Fremont, with a second factory planned for Giga Texas. Initial output will focus on simple factory tasks before expanding. 

Prior videos have demonstrated prototypes performing tasks such as cooking, cleaning, vacuuming, folding clothes, and basic mobility. Musk described scenarios where Optimus could handle repetitive or hazardous work.
