The Windham Police Department says one person is dead after their car crashed into an apartment building and caused a natural gas leak. Police said the crash happened at about 7:40 a.m. Saturday morning in the area of Route 115 in North Windham. Officials say the driver, whose identity has not yet been released, died at the scene. According to investigators, a vehicle crossed the center line, left the road, and struck an apartment building. They said the vehicle impacted the building’s natural gas meter, resulting in a significant natural gas leak. Authorities said the affected building and several nearby residences were evacuated while emergency crews worked to secure the scene and mitigate the hazard. As a result, part of Route 115 was closed and power was disconnected, according police. The Cumberland County Regional Communications Center has confirmed to Maine’s Total Coverage that the road is now reopened and power is being restored. The Windham Police department says the crash remains under investigation.
