Tory rebels are planning a takeover of the 1922 Committee of backbenchers to lay the ground for another attempt to oust Boris Johnson.

Opponents of the prime minister are planning to nominate a slate of candidates sympathetic to changing rules that bar another leadership challenge for the next year.

The prime minister promised today to “listen and learn” from bruising Conservative defeats at by-elections in Wakefield and Tiverton & Honiton. In the latter seat Richard Foord of the Liberal Democrats overturned a majority of more than 24,000, making it the biggest Conservative margin overturned in a British by-election. The Lib Dems secured a 6,144 majority in Tiverton & Honiton, with an almost 30 percentage point swing. …

Johnson’s critics are hoping to secure a majority on the executive of the influential 1922 Committee of Tory backbenchers, in the hope they can change the party’s rules to allow a fresh confidence vote without waiting for a year.

Boris Johnson’s allies are scrambling to thwart a new leadership challenge by trying to block a change in party rules. Tory whips are already planning how to get pro-Johnson MPs onto the 1922 Committee executive when its elections are held, expected next month.

  2. It seems to me that if you want rid of the Tories, rather than just rid of Johnson then your interests are better served by the party leaving him in place until to the next election. He is in my opinion a busted flush, stumbling from one crisis to another in a forever cycle of reboots & fire-fighting. Particularly given the economic situation I see no prospect of him getting a majority at the next election.

  3. Who are they going to replace him with? And if they find someone credible how do they form a competent cabinet when there are only incompetent dunces left in the Conservative PP?
