JERICHO, Vt. (WCAX) — The Jericho Historical Society held a ceremony Sunday to honor 11 Revolutionary War veterans buried in the Jericho Center Cemetery, marking the 250th anniversary of American independence.
Descendants of the veterans attended the event, reading short biographies of their ancestors and placing a Revolutionary War patriot marker on each grave.
Sue Richardson, vice president of the Jericho Historical Society, honored her four-times-great-grandfather, Roger Stevens, who served at Valley Forge with George Washington.
“I’ve put flags out here before, but there was no marker indicating his service — or for any of the eleven that we honored today — so we thought it was about time that their service was recognized,” Richardson said.
The veterans were identified with the help of the Green Mountain Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Of the 11 honored, only a few were born in Vermont, but each called Jericho home.
