Full disclosure; I currently work for oD, but I’ve not been asked to share this story in a professional capacity.
Just wanted to share how absolutely sickening this is, and it really makes the arguments of ‘people are dying because of these strikes’ narrative you hear all the more awful because there was absolutely no need to end up in this situation in the first place!
But that can’t be right we were told tha jobs must be cut and wages can’t increase because there is no money and they need to save save save. You can’t tell me that people have lied ???
Pricks.
Total re-nationalisation of rail is the best option. It would actually be cheaper I think. It would be even better if the UK actually started to manufacture it’s own rolling stock again as well
None of the £16.2bn pandemic payment will have gone to workers, either. I would imagine that also went to shareholders and bosses.
That’s fucking disgusting.
I can’t wait to see the interviews of Mick trying to explain the 800m to shareholders but there’s no money to make sure the employees can eat and pay rent whilst the media interviewer is busy trying to get him to admit that he secretly believes he’s literally Hitler reincarnate and that he has a shrine built to Jack The Ripper in his basement whereby he sacrifices single young women he kidnaps off the streets at night or some such bullshit
£800m in ticket hikes, government subsidies and price gouging. What an expensive, ineffective system.
Ah so the workers need to take a pay cut every year while the shareholders get 800m out of the companies that apparently couldn’t afford a pay rise. Wow
People are finally waking up and smelling the coffee
Welcome to public services ran by private companies, next up… the NHS
i am so disappointed in you people over there. i thought you were better than us. though american corporate greed is much more blatant and entrenched.
What firms did this? Lets all email them a piece of our mind. CEO email addresses are easily found online.
Like the fat cats give a fuck. They only care about themselves.
The enormity of this information is stark … if there was ever a clearer message to the people as to the government’s care and concern for anything other than the almighty pound and profit, I do not know what it would be.
Yeah but the shareholders work so hard!
First group (89,000 employees) gave 500 million in profit to shareholders.
They could give a £2,200 pound raise to every employee and still profit 300 million.
We’re going through the same at Royal Mail. “Sorry we’re really poor as we pay £700,000 per year to the big boss and several hundred million to our shareholders. Here’s 2%…”. Fuck off.
Says it all really.
Companies returning a ridiculous amount of company money to shareholders and the Board instead of keeping wages rising with inflation, let alone with company profits. A tale as old as time. Average quality of life, cost of living and wealth inequality will only continue to deteriorate until something is done about the broken unchecked corporate compensation system we have right now.
Capitalism is so good
Pay increases for rail workers are being blocked by the government, not the train operating companies. The franchises were always quite tightly controlled by the government, and since covid and the new contracts even more so.
Sorry to spoil reddits faux outrage with facts.
You know, maybe that Karl Marx guy had a point about class conflict
It’s almost like privatisation for key services doesn’t work?
You see, money likes to be with money. Money naturally wants to go to rich people. Money does not like to go to poor people. So we really have no choice here…
How the fuck is this even legal?
I fucking hate all this shit.
Country’s fucked……. What with everything else.
Ffs.
You know I’m starting to think the big outlets reporting of this may be a little bias, just a teeny tiny hunch.
That’s all money taken out of the service. That could be used for improvements and new infrastructure.
That headline highlights precisely why nationalising the rail network is essential. This strike could have been awarded if shareholders weren’t involved.
People who still believe low wages are due to anything other than greed at the top are genuinely delusional. There are more billionaires on this planet than there ever have been before, there’s plenty of money, it’s just sitting in someone’s bank account rather than being used.
hey, so why’s it left for people like you to tell us this? The Labour Front bench should be asking these questions and beating up Tories over this.
But the Daily Heil told me that the train drivers that we’re striking we’re all on £80k a year and spent all day counting their gold with the train on cruise control…?

It’s only class warfare when the workers fight back
It’s high time we nationalised the railway once more.

>Three years ago we accepted a 0% pay rise, two years ago we accepted a 0% pay rise. But this year they came to us with a 0% pay rise plus over 2500 redundancies, changes to terms and conditions. An increase from 28 weeks of nights to 39 weeks of nights. An increase from 32 weekends worked to 39 weekends worked. Currently for a night shift we get time and a quarter, for a weekend turn we get time and a half. They wish to cut both of these to time and a tenth. So that’s 45% pay cut on every night shift and a 40% pay cut on every weekend turn. But they want us to work more of them. This is their modernisation they talk about. Not technology, we embrace technology and have seen more and more of it in recent years. They also wish to fire and re-hire the operative grades and bring them back under a new job title but on £9000 a year less. They also want them to use their own vehicles to get to work sites, this when fuel is at its highest. They will also be pooled when currently they are part of the team. The press are painting this to be about pay above all else. It is not. But now we’ve said sod them we are going to demand better. I wish everyone could see past the government controlled media smear.
The privatisation and bleeding dry of the British rail network at the expense of workers and passengers should be a national scandal
I genuinely don’t understand how this is still legal. The fact that profits aren’t tied to wages and rewards for your WORKERS before your shareholders makes me want to go full proletarian revolution.
Went had the BBC not reported this?
Nationalise it.
We are also taking about how bad extremism is, especially when it comes to religion.
But what we are facing now is the result of extreme Capitalism. Where profit is championed above everything else including human life dignity and welfare.
Just a random thought, What if they did not give RMT workers a pay rise but,. Shares in the business based on longevity of service?
shares to be continued into pension and terminated at death?
Of. Course. They. Did.
Isn’t the point of share holders that they want the company to do well and should vote down daft things like this or have I missed some thing?
