MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – Northern Michigan University continues to invest in campus infrastructure. NMU has now secured state funding to relocate the College of Business.
Recently, NMU secured $13 million from the state, part of an overall $23 million project. That project includes relocating the College of Business from the eastern fringes of campus to a new addition on the Hedgcock Building.
Over the past two years, the College of Business has grown 41 percent. NMU Spokesperson Derek Hall says this will bring the College of Business and its students to the heart of campus.
“It’s really a great thing; it’s going to bring the College of Business out in front. It’s been kind of invisible for a lot of years; the offices for faculty are in Cohodas, and they teach all over campus, and this will consolidate that and really improve this entrance of campus,” Hall said.
Tom Isaacson is the Interim Dean for the College of Business at NMU. He says the faculty and students have been separated on campus for years, and this project will remedy that.
“I myself was an NMU Student in the 1990’s, and even then, when I was going to classes in old Jamrich Hall, our faculty were separated from the classroom space. So, to bring this together is great for students, it’s great for faculty, even our prospective students and campus visitors are going to see NMU in a whole new way,” Isaacson said.
Hall says the project could also help the College of Business continue to grow.
“The new addition is going to have some community space, a lot of study space, labs; cybersecurity has really grown, and we need new labs for them. It’s just going to be a great place for students to connect with faculty and learn, and to help our College of Business grow,” Hall said.
The project is currently in the final stages of the design process. There is no exact timetable yet for the physical construction of the Hedgcock addition.
