The successor has apparently been anointed.
Axios is reporting that President Donald Trump has decided who he wants to succeed him in the White House.
Trump insiders are saying that the president has chosen to throw his weight behind Vice President JD Vance.
The decision comes after Trump had allowed a rivalry to play out between Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
“JD is earning it, and Trump sees it,” a White House insider said.
This source added that Rubio “wasn’t planning to run anyway, and he’d be even less likely to do so now.”
Another Trump administration source said: “POTUS isn’t asking, ‘JD or Marco?’ anymore.”
The president, the source said, has instead been saying, “JD looks great, right?”
Vance has been doing the media rounds to promote his new book, “Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith,” even garnering good reviews after appearing on the lefty chat show, “The View.”
The vice president is also slated to do a full-on book tour over the next several weeks.
Vance has also showed off his fundraising muscle, scooping up roughly $70 million for the Republican National Committee.
The veep has also gotten kudos for being part of the team that forged a tentative agreement to end the war with Iran.
Vance has long been the polling favorite to be the 2028 GOP nominee for president.

But Rubio has upped his profile by increasingly becoming a go-to advisor for Trump on national security and foreign policy issues.
Trump had previously said that a 2028 GOP ticket of Vance-Rubio would be formidable.
Underlining the Axios reporting, the Daily Beast said that Axios is “an increasingly pro-Trump outlet” and that the story comes from “its most MAGA-coded reporter, Marc Caputo.”
