They found you a 6 bed mixed dorm… Christ.
Things like this should be illegal. If you were to cancel they would refuse you a refund. Turn up at the hotel and demand to see why the room you have booked since last year is unavailable.
Get on Trip Advisor, Google reviews, anywhere that has recommendations for said hotel and slate them.
How could they possibly think that hostel is a suitable replacement?
I’d be calling that hotel non stop until they either honour the booking or find a comparable or better alternative.
Kinlay House – Review score 6.7
The Google reviews are gas. It’s very dirty, and that’s the least of the problems.
Don’t go there, OP
Went onto trip advisor and they aren’t open yet.
They shouldn’t be able to take bookings they cannot honor. It should be a full refund or a free night in lieu if they cancel based on this. I worked at a place and we had a delay in opening so they honored it this way.
Cost us a good buck but the place is thriving because people understood snags happen and they took responsibility for it.
Try Premier Inn or Jurys.
You don’t need to book weeks in advance, both in the city centre and actually reasonably priced.
My uncle’s hotel cancelled on him too last minute, this isn’t a one-off thing. Disgraceful.
Passed this hotel recently on the luas and its not finished being built yet.
Not the first time I’ve heard the Hilton name mentioned in a mess like this .
Politely insist with Booking.com to either get a proper replacement or a decent coupon to spend on another hotel. I can’t speak for Booking, but I had a similar issue with AirBnB, was offered a shitty solution, and I kept calling the hotline until I got some money. I think these hotlines have a “specific case” process they can follow when generic refunds are unsatisfactory to the customer
Go to the hotel before the check in opens and drop off your bags and try to check in, act like you never got the email for the cancellation and demand the room you reserved when they try to say it’s unavailable. Show them the confirmation email that you booked it.
(I say before the proper check in time so you have more chance of getting a room), I’d be surprised if they don’t accommodate you, the young ones behind the counter will just get the manager and they’ll hopefully say yes to avoid a scene.
It’s a shitty situation they put you in.
Try avoid booking on booking.com as you don’t have a booking with the hotel it’s with booking.com so they’ll always prioritise direct customers as they don’t have to pay commission to booking.com
Be cheaper to travel to England for most gigs these days
Jesus Christ it’s not built yet. I sympathise with the OP and his situation but if course they have to cancel it ?
This just happened to me on Airbnb I’ll never use that app again
For a city that only builds hotels, how are they getting more expensive?
One of the reasons I only ever book direct with the hotel, I’ve been burned before.
We had this in a west Dublin golf club some years back. We booked long before a wedding and on the day they said they had no reservation for us, We showed the confirmation but they stood fast for a while, It was myself my brother an my parents , We had booked three rooms and had been chuffed that we got such a good price compared to other wedding guests.. At least until then. They paid for a taxi to another hotel and booked us rooms there and free taxis back and forth for the wedding in the end. Probably still made money on rebooking our rooms. The bastards.
OP, the Marlin is showing availability for 2 adults at €299. Cheaper than what they’re recommending and you’re not sharing with randoms in a hostel. Still steep but an option.
Use Twitter
Had this happen to me in Munich with the Euros.
Got a ticket for Germany vs France and booked a nice chain hotel for 2 nights for €128 straight away.
When they realised what was going on and the surge happened, prices skyrocketed in the city.
I was pretty happy with myself getting a good deal, then out of nowhere they demanded an extra €250ish quid or they’d cancel the room.
*Apparently* there was an error on their system when I booked it…
Isn’t this one of the downsides of booking hotels through third parties like booking.com? I’ve read a lot of horror stories and that when you do that there’s no agreement between the hotel and you as the guest that it’s an agreement between the hotel and the 3rd party website… Who probably got this at some discount with some terms that you’re not aware of.
I wonder if you would have had this experience if you booked directly with the hotel
Bunratty Castle Hotel are currently contacting couples to cancel weddings at short notice while they are still attending wedding fairs and taking bookings from new couples.
A 6 bedroom mixed dorm as a replacement? What a fucking piss take. Id give them absolute hell
OP you should reach out to someone at Hilton on the corporate end – the hotel are usually useless in these scenarios. Try to find hilton entertainment contacts on LinkedIn and ask them to help you before slating them online. Threaten to review bomb but give a chance to resolve. They will sort it out if it avoids bad press im sure
This is like a really shit Tesco delivery substitution.
“We couldn’t find any cucumber so we substituted it for cyanide”
Place a second booking at the raised price and then show up and demand the original room
As someone who works in the hotel industry, never book 3rd party. Use bookingcom and expedia etc to find a place and read some reviews then book directly with the hotel. The hotel is paying anywhere from 10-25% commission to the third party, going direct and calling the in-house reservations team or reception is you best bet at getting a couple of euro knocked off the top or breakfasted/room upgrade/late check-out/early check-in added at no extra cost.
More to that, it’s in the contract with bookingcom, we cannot contact the guest directly. Bookingcom reservations don’t even include the guests email etc instead we get a generated email like guest_1234234@bookingcom that goes to bookingcom and they decide if they want to forward it to the guest or not. Likewise, if you call the hotel and ask to cancel a booking because of an emergency, I have to tell you over the phone “I’m sorry, we cannot amend a booking on behalf of a guest, you need to contact x company directly” then I have to sit and get abuse because people don’t realise it’s not that I am lazy or indifferent or whatever they seem to think. It’s that when I go to the special bookingcom etc website that only hotels have access to, there is literally no-where I can click to change a booking or cancel a booking. The only things I can do is mark your booking as a no-show to tell them you didn’t arrive in which case they will charge you a non-arrival fee, or I can mark your credit card as having a problem in which case they will send you a generic email saying to update your card details or I can send a message to bookingcom in the hopes that they forward it to you.
I’ve even had 3rd party websites sell rooms in the hotel without us knowing about it, as in, we had never communicated with the company before, let alone entered an agreement or contract with them and had a guest just walk into the hotel having paid €450 to Tom, Dick and Harry Tours LTD demanding a room.
I once had a guest come to the desk wanting to cancel the last night of the stay due to a family emergency and needing to go home, I got her the number to the 3rd party company and she called them and explained the situation, they put her on hold and called me and I told them the hotel would be happy to waive the last night’s rate and not charge a cancelation fee and hung up, then I watched as the company rep explained to the woman standing in front of me that the hotel had refused to refund the last night, not realising the guest was standing in the lobby directly in front of me and had heard me tell him the hotel would be happy to refund the guest.
I hope you enjoy <PLACE OF ORIGIN> .
Call Joe Duffy, she’ll help you
This should be illegal. Outrageous
It may have been commented already but aside from the shit storm that OP is dealing with, €354 for a night in a shared 6 bed dorm!!!!!?? What planet are they on!?
Just a sidenote, these are the same people who run the holiday inn on O’Connell street who are extending the hotel over the beer garden. Have dealt with them in the past, very difficult and greedy.
