Title: New threats from Ankara: Demilitarize the islands or we challenge their sovereignty “and wherever that leads” Oktay says.
Ankara insists on provocative rhetoric, with Turkish Vice President Fiyat Oktay raising the issue of questioning the sovereignty of the Greek islands. “We will question their sovereignty and wherever this challenge goes,” he stressed.
In an interview with Milliyet, Oktay said that Greece’s approach to the issue of our persistent demand for the “demilitarization” of the islands is particularly disturbing for Turkey, and that Greece behaves with the logic “these islands are our own and we do what we want”. He said that the EU stands behind this approach.
The vice president of Turkey also said, referring to Greece, that “Greece is trying to keep the issue of 12 miles up to date and to do in the air what Greece cannot do at sea”.
“Turkey has been patient for a 100 years. First the invasion, then hiding behind the Treaty of Lausanne. Lausanne has a term of demilitarization. The 1946 Treaties have the same terms. It is foolish to think that they can interpret the terms of the Treaties as they wish and Turkey will accept it. There is no chance that Turkey will accept this,” Oktay continued.
“It’s clear how we reacted in the early 1900s with our independence struggle when they tried similar things. 100 years is not a long time in the history of nations. What we lived through with Cyprus is a more recent memory “, said the Vice President of Turkey and added:
“We hope that Greece will soon come to its senses, and we warn it not to be influenced by others. They (the “others”) are the ones who will abandon them first. They argue from a distance of 600 kilometers in Kastellorizo, which is right next to us at a distance of two kilometers, they talk about a violation of airspace and nervously violate our airspace. Turkey cannot accept such an approach.
“The Turkish vice-president concluded by saying: “The islands will be demilitarized, otherwise their sovereignty will be questioned. As Turkey we will do that. We will challenge it. And where does this questioning of sovereignty go? “This depends on Greece, and the EU must see their (Greece’s) mistakes.”
I’m tired…every day something new.
We can play a game and try to guess what they’ll say each day.
A new reminder of how strong they are? Of what they did 100 years ago with more than 3 million total dead? How they will throw the Greeks at sea again like when they burned Ismir and killed tens of thousand civilians? Or how they managed to divide Cyprus like they wanted since they supported segregation in the island from the 60′?
Or that Greek islands are a few kilometers from the Turkish coast and sooo far from the Greek mainland so they should have no airspace, no EEZ, no 12 miles that the UNCLOS says? Or that the islands aren’t actually Greek and they are occupied by Greece? Or that the militarization is against international law, or Lausanne or whatever else they picked today?
Or that EU favors Greece and they should keep equal distances instead?
How people are jingoists if they keep trying to win votes this way? And if they don’t get their way will they get more hostile to Greece? Then what?
I’m tired of this.
Don’t give them a reason to not do that.
Why can’t anyone be friendly these days?
Wasn’t this posted here yesterday?
Well I’m not a government official so I can’t tell if greece is actually militarizing the islands or not. But even if they are militarizing it’s not a reason to directly start a conflict. There is a thing called politics. As a Turk if Turkey starts an aggresive conflict, I won’t be supporting my country in any ways.
This challenges leads to Turkey finding out it’s not as important a part of NATO as it thinks it is.
Glad that Ukraine is not bordering Turkey. Second Russia on our border would be too much
Is there an election coming up or something?
A Russia inside NATO, that’s what we needed right now. I cannot wait for erdogan to go.
If a NATO country attacks a NATO country who does NATO support?
I feel sorry for you man. You post the same article with different sources every day. Your whole history is filled with Turkish hate post. Go outside and touch some grass. And get help asap.
Sounds even worse thsn Erdopoop …..
Having turkey in nato is almost as stupid as having russia in nato. Their sole reason for entry was to contain the soviet Union in the confines of the black Sea. Things have changed now though and russia no longer has a navy that is capable of projecting power globally. If there was any time to kick turkey out of nato its NOW
That would solve “Turkey in NATO problem” pretty damn fast.
How can a country such as Turkey be a NATO member? Destabilizing NATO under current circumstances? Fuck them.
Turkey v France and Greece.
This is awful
turkish are crazy or what? why going after small islands ??
when authoritarian regimes start failing they love to pick up fights left and right
I really don’t know what they are looking for except death and dishonor, all the European countries will be behind Greece and Malta and the sanctions would destroy their country, but i must admit that Erdogan is doing this job well by himself
