A Sweden-based startup has unveiled an ‘intelligent’ interceptor drone which can prove to be effective in downing aerial threats in a short range.
Sweden-based Nordic Air Defense (NAD) unveiled the K100XR in a live operational setting. In the public unveiling, the interceptor detected and engaged target drones in real time.
NAD CEO Karl Rosander claims that the K100XR interceptor could replace the expensive missiles and other munitions which are used to down enemy unmanned aerial vehicles. He also stated that the drone is built for “high speed, autonomy, maneuverability and a low cost per kill.”
K100XR unveiling at a critical time
The interceptor drone has been unveiled at a time when the West is looking at a safe, reliable, and effective solution to the drone issue. The use of drones in the Russia-Ukraine and the US-Israel wars has showcased their destructive capability.
Therefore, Europe is looking for solutions that can be scaled at a mass scale in a short span of time to effectively counter any imminent threats. The K100XR offers just that, a cheap solution in place of a missile that can cost hundreds of dollars.
According to the company, the interceptor drone is just one foot (0.3 meters) long, and can exceed speeds of 219 miles per hour (354 km per hour). The lightweight unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) also has onboard artificial intelligence (AI) which helps it detect, track and engage aerial threats without any external input.
Built from carbon fiber, it can function safely at altitudes of up to 3,281 feet (1,000 meters), and take down drones in a range of two miles (three km). The company believes that it can function as an effective countermeasure for Shahed, Shahed-like kamikaze, and other reconnaissance drones that are being used in modern warfare, according to a report by NextGen Defense.
Onboard AI makes it operate with radio silence
The presence of onboard AI allows the interceptor drone to maintain radio silence while operating on the battlefield. It comes with a fire and forget type of mechanism that allows it to track and engage enemy UAVs on its own.
An interesting feature of the interceptor is that once launched it can stay in the air and search autonomously for enemy systems without relying on instructions from the operator.
The radio-silence feature also allows it to take down enemy threats without transmitting any signals to the ground operator. This makes it less vulnerable to jamming and interception threats from enemy systems. It can also hover in the air without the need for any contact with the ground controller.
