I love river cruising in Europe and have been fortunate to have sailed almost a dozen times on at least six different cruise lines. When planning this summer’s trip, I accepted an invitation from VIVA Cruises‘ media relations team to experience one of the company’s complimentary sailings. The German river cruise line isn’t exactly a household name in the U.S., and I was especially curious to see how it would compare with other lines and how well it would work for our family with two young kids.
What we found was a surprisingly easy, comfortable and low-stress way to see Europe. From Vienna to Budapest and beyond, the trip felt more like staying in a floating boutique hotel than anything resembling a traditional cruise. Here are 15 things that stood out most.
1. Check-in couldn’t have been easier
Unlike ocean cruises, boarding a river cruise is quick and simple. There are no crowds, long lines or security checkpoints. The friendly staff took our passports, handled our luggage and we were in our cabin within minutes, where we were issued hotel-style keycards.
2. VIVA is still a hidden gem for Americans
The German river cruise line has only been around since 2018 and remains relatively unknown in the U.S. But in Europe, VIVA has been steadily expanding its fleet and itinerary offerings, sailing many of the continent’s most popular rivers, including the Rhine, Danube, Main, Moselle and Seine. The line positions itself as a premium, all-inclusive alternative to some of the better-known river cruise brands, with modern ships, contemporary interiors and a relaxed onboard atmosphere.
3. The cabins were bigger than expected
River cruise cabins can be quite tight, but ours felt surprisingly spacious with smart storage and room for luggage under the bed. The bed was extremely comfortable and we never felt claustrophobic in our cabins (225 and 227).
4. The bathrooms were a standout
The shower had excellent (and I mean excellent!) water pressure and the space felt more like a boutique hotel than a ship cabin.
5. Free drinks are part of the experience
Each cabin includes a mini fridge stocked with complimentary beverages, plus 24/7 access to coffee, tea and water stations.
6. The ship is impressively quiet
Once inside the cabin, it felt calm and insulated, with most noise only noticeable while sailing or passing through locks. It was quiet enough to sit and work while we were sailing and my wife took the kids up to the lounge to read.
7. VIVA leans into sustainability
Daily schedules are digital or posted onboard (as opposed to being printed for every cabin, every day), and guests receive reusable aluminum water bottles instead of plastic.
8. The food exceeded expectations
The breakfast waffles really stood out (seriously delicious!), and many meals featured local dishes inspired by the regions we were sailing through.
9. The crew really stood out
The service on-board felt personal, especially when it came to managing my son’s food allergies. The maître d’ and chef went above and beyond to accommodate his dietary restrictions and it meant the world to us.
10. It’s not built as a kids’ cruise—but kids are welcome
There are no kids’ clubs yet my 9- and 6-year-olds stayed entertained the entire time. They especially enjoyed the mini golf but also appreciated the quiet time on board to read, draw and enjoy the views.
11. The pool is more of a plunge pool
There’s a pool on board; it’s small but perfect for cooling off on warm afternoons.
12. Location is everything on a river cruise
The nice thing about sailing on a river cruise is that the ships are small enough to dock right in or near city centers. This makes it very easy to simply walk off the ship and explore on foot.
13. The lounge becomes the social hub
A large lounge above the main restaurant is cozy and fills up during organized activities like ice cream socials and live cultural performances, including traditional local entertainers.
14. Free bikes are available onboard
Complimentary bicycles are stored on the sun deck, giving guests a fun way to explore ports (though there weren’t any children’s bikes available on our sailing.)
15. The wellness space is a hidden highlight
The onboard spa is small but thoughtfully designed, with a peaceful atmosphere enhanced by the soothing sound of the river flowing along the hull below deck. Despite its compact size, I enjoyed an excellent massage that left me feeling completely relaxed.
I’d sail with VIVA again in a heartbeat. The combination of attentive service, modern ships, excellent food and a relaxed atmosphere made for a memorable trip and I appreciated how easy the experience felt from embarkation to disembarkation. Overall, it was a peaceful, stress-free way to explore Europe, one that left me looking forward to my next river cruise.
