Pope Leo XIV has encouraged young Catholics in Iraq to become witnesses of hope and instruments of peace in a country still carrying the wounds of conflict and instability.
In a video message to the annual Iraqi Youth Meeting held from July 8 to 11 in Ankawa, in the Archeparchy of Erbil, the Pope called on participants to embrace their mission of sharing the light of Christ. The gathering this year focuses on the theme “Mission.”
According to Vatican News, Pope Leo XIV told the young people that they have an essential role in the Church’s life today, reminding them that young people are “not only the future of the Church, but also the present.”
“The Church has a vital mission to serve the world by sharing the light of Christ,” the Pope said, encouraging young Iraqis to help shape both the Church and society in the years ahead.
Recognizing the difficult circumstances faced by many Iraqi Christians, Pope Leo acknowledged that living the Gospel in a society marked by war and uncertainty is not always easy.
“It is not always easy to be a light in the world,” he said, while urging the youth: “Do not be afraid! And do not think that you are alone in this task. I am with you; the Church is with you. Place your trust in Jesus.”
As reported by Vatican News, the Pope explained that light helps people see clearly, just as faith enables believers to recognize truth and view the world through God’s perspective. He urged young people to bear witness through their daily lives so that others may discover the meaning and hope they seek.
He also described light as a source of warmth, pointing to God’s love. True mission, he said, begins with a personal encounter with Christ strengthened through prayer and the sacraments, especially Reconciliation and the Eucharist.
“Ground your hearts in the solid foundation of God’s love for you,” Pope Leo said, inviting young people to discover the heart of Christ and build their lives upon him.
Finally, the Pope presented light as a symbol of growth and hope, calling Iraqi youth to become peacemakers in a region longing for reconciliation.
“You are particularly called to be peacemakers, to unite those around you, and to instill in others the hope of a future marked by lasting peace,” he said.
Concluding his message, Pope Leo XIV entrusted the young people to the care of Mary, Mother of the Church, encouraging them to trust in God’s plan for their lives and never doubt his goodness.
