Federal officials have cleared a major production milestone for the newest variant of the US air-delivered nuclear arsenal ahead of the original timeline.
The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) confirmed that the Y-12 National Security Complex finished the “diamond stamping” process for all B61-13 canned subassemblies assigned to the current fiscal year. This manufacturing phase concluded three months earlier than planned.
In a thermonuclear weapon, the canned subassembly contains the secondary stage capsule inside a sealed metal casing. Earning a diamond stamp means these parts have successfully passed all quality checks and are authorized to enter the active US military stockpile.
The B61-13 is a modernized gravity bomb engineered for deployment by strategic bomber aircraft. The NNSA created this version in partnership with the Department of War to address specialized military requirements, specifically targeting heavily fortified underground structures.
Ahead of internal schedule
While it shares the safety and guidance systems of the older B61-12, the B61-13 possesses a higher explosive yield to neutralize larger or more resilient targets.
“The progress on the B61-13 program demonstrates the Nuclear Security Enterprise’s ability to respond to evolving geopolitical requirements with speed and precision,” said NNSA Administrator Brandon Williams.
“This milestone directly supports our goals to modernize our nuclear deterrent and sends a message to our adversaries that our national defense remains agile, secure, and effective.”
The production of this variant has progressed rapidly since its inception. The NNSA assembled the initial B61-13 unit in May 2025, which was roughly one year ahead of the internal schedule and within 24 months of the initial public announcement.
This timeline represents one of the fastest development cycles for a US nuclear weapon system since the conclusion of the Cold War.
The speed of the B61-13 rollout is linked to the conclusion of the preceding B61-12 Life Extension Program. The B61 family of bombs has remained in service for more than five decades, making it the oldest baseline design in the American nuclear inventory.
Restructuring the factory systems
The NNSA finished the final production unit of the B61-12 variant in December 2024. The refurbishment project consolidated four older iterations of the bomb into a single model, refurbished internal components to extend their operational lifespan by two decades, and added a guided tail kit to increase accuracy while reducing the necessary explosive yield.
Once the B61-12 production line closed, the NNSA repurposed the existing manufacturing infrastructure to produce the B61-13. This transition allowed the agency to skip long setup periods and begin assembling the newer, higher-yield bombs immediately.
The B61-13 represents one part of a wider effort by the NNSA to overhaul domestic nuclear manufacturing capabilities. The agency is currently managing six active warhead modernization programs simultaneously. Internal data indicates that all six of these modernization efforts are currently operating ahead of their projected deadlines.
“Completing the 2026 baseline deliverables ahead of schedule is a clear indicator of discipline and operational focus,” concluded Williams.
The ongoing work involves restructuring the factory systems and material supply chains across the entire Nuclear Security Enterprise to build a more adaptable manufacturing framework for future defense needs.
