> Ms Burke told councillors that the cameras kept the privacy of local residents and only zoomed in when needed.
Cameras for privacy are like chips for dieting, or steaks for veganism.
Like the idea of CCTV looking out for us but you know when you need it, it won’t be working or will be facing the wrong way.
People who are moaning about privacy probably don’t have an issue for the video doorbells etc. As long as the CCTV is used correctly then this can only be a good thing.
I’m not that old but I remember when CCTV first started being installed and used. The outrage and the spitting fury of people about privacy and Orwell 1984 and the same diatribes we got with wearing masks to combat COVID, all were present.
Does it impact your life? Do you feel watched, spied on? You go up and down the high street and you’re none the wiser. Now look at the good they do. All the time you see crimes solved or made that much easier to solve by the evidence it provides. Every crime documentary has stacks of it. It works.
They are to protect people walking home on the dark… I mean they could just turn the street lights back on!
CCTV is proven to provide a deterrent but all too often CCTV turns out to not provide evidence for crimes due to inadequate quality equipment and placement.
For the rate of CCTV we have you’d think it would be more common to hear of it solving and aiding justice. Obviously not every story gets attention but it does feel like we need some more proof of how effective it is working to justify the extent of it.
the other 150 crimes in that one month, however…..
