PLAQUEMINE, La. (WAFB) – Family members, friends, and community members gathered Friday evening for a candlelight vigil to honor 7-year-old Paris Williams, whose death has deeply impacted the Addis community.
The vigil centered on prayer, remembrance, and support for Paris’ loved ones as investigators continue working to determine how the child died.
Among those in attendance was Paris’ father, Markies Williams, along with other relatives, faith leaders, and community members who came together to offer comfort during an emotional evening.
“This baby was 7-years-old. She hadn’t lived her life, and a piece of our community was destroyed when she was taken,” said Dr. Sondra Washington, a family friend.
The vigil comes as the criminal investigation into Paris’ death continues.
Authorities have arrested Paris’ mother, Breyonne Dorsey, accusing her of trying to cover up the child’s death. Dorsey’s boyfriend, Christopher Butler, was also arrested in connection with the case.
Investigators have not said how Paris died, and the cause and circumstances surrounding her death remain under investigation.
While much of the evening focused on remembering Paris, organizers also encouraged those in attendance to pray for the families of everyone involved.
“We get so caught up in the victim, but what about the person that’s being accused of doing this?” Washington said. “That family is hurting as well because who wants their family to do anything horrific?”
Supporters held candles as they prayed together, saying they wanted Paris’ family to know they are not alone during their grief.
“This family at this time, they’re hurting. And they need to know that somebody cares,” Washington said.
One of the vigil organizers, Claudine Williams, said she understands the pain of losing a child because she has experienced it herself.
“I lost a daughter. So, I know the feeling,” Williams said.
She said the community’s support must continue long after the funeral services are over.
“When the funeral is over, the phone calls stop, the visits stop. I’ve been through it. I know,” Williams said. “That’s when you need people the most. That’s when you need the love, the support, and people to be there for you.”
The investigation into Paris Williams’ death remains ongoing.
Her funeral is set for Saturday, July 11, at 11 a.m. at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church.
