The government is advancing major reforms to strengthen the country’s legal and regulatory framework by drafting a new unified and harmonised Citizenship, Immigration and Refugees Bill.
At a media briefing in Pretoria on Sunday afternoon, the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Migration announced that the bill is expected to be published for public comment later this year.
At the same time, cabinet ministers on the committee stated that the Department of Transport is developing new regulations to curb the misuse of the Traffic Registration Number as a form of identification. This initiative reinforces ongoing efforts to improve the integrity of official identity systems.
According to the government, these initiatives form part of a broader drive to modernise legislation, close regulatory gaps, and enhance governance across critical sectors.
Inter-Ministerial Committee Chairperson and Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi stated that the state is also implementing and responding to key court rulings while actively managing a range of legal matters that remain before the courts.
