Sounds very neo-colonial. Let’s have every place determine their our fate please. Europe has done so for the rest of the world for hundreds of years, and it didn’t exactly turn out great.
De Gaulle was one of the greatest European leaders of the 20th century. He understood that the British were just the American’s lackeys and twice vetoed the UK’s membership of the EU.
So are we celebrating 62 years of Charles de Gaulle being bombastically deluded, or..?
These days it is forgotten and Europe stands for the EU in minds of many today be it major medias based in the EU or UK or North America or even in discussions on this subreddit talking about non-EU states living to the East of EU as if it’s not Europe but something else.
