King Charles III Formal Proclamation

King Charles III, Queen Elizabeth II’s eldest son, who rushed to be at her bedside in Balmoral in Scotland on Thursday, automatically became King upon his mother’s death.

London: A day after Queen Elizabeth II died at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, the Buckingham Palace on Friday announced that King Charles III will formally be proclaimed monarch by the Accession Council at St James’s Palace on Saturday.

According to reports, the formal body overseeing the succession from Queen Elizabeth II will meet from 10:00 am (0900 GMT) with a first public pronouncement from a balcony of St James’s Palace in London at 11:00 AM.

In general, the Accession Council takes place at St James’s Palace in London within 24 hours of the death of a sovereign but it will be later this time as the Queen’s death was not announced until early evening and there was not time to set plans for Friday.

As per the historic tradition, the entire Privy Council is summoned to the Accession Council to oversee the formal proclamation of a new monarch but with the number of privy counsellors, now new restrictions have been put in place.

It should be noted that King Charles III is the third British monarch to share the name. Prior to him, Charles I was the only British monarch to be executed, Charles I’s reign led to a brutal civil war and the abolition of the royal family.
