MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – Monday’s extreme heat gave Yoopers a taste of temperatures in the mid to upper 90s with high humidity. Health experts are sharing tips to keep cool and avoid heat exhaustion.
With temperatures in the upper 90s, high humidity and a rising heat index, many places in upper Michigan are experiencing what feels like triple-digit heat.
The Marquette Sheriff’s Office posted online reminders about staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous activity, and listed cooling centers. Staff at Marquette Medical and Urgent Care are also sharing the warning signs of heat exhaustion.
“Feeling dizzy, lightheaded, fatigued, loss of energy, really dizzy and lightheaded are the big ones, that’s when you’re going to want to take frequent, small breaks, stay hydrated, stay inside if you can,” said Marquette Medical Nurse Amanda Atkins.
Atkins also shares what to do if you start to feel dizzy or lightheaded from the heat.
“I would sit down, I would sit your hind end down and I would take it easy, sit in shade, get help if you can, and try to get into a cool vehicle, a cool room, somewhere where you can try to cool your body down, you can even put cold, wet washcloths behind your neck in your groin, on your forehead, even under your armpits, take a cold shower, just to cool your body down,” Atkins said.
Atkins also warned about how hot vehicles can get during this heat wave and reminded people not to leave pets or small children in vehicles. Health experts say the most vulnerable people in extreme heat and humidity are the elderly and young athletes, but anyone can experience heat illness.
