WAUNAKEE, Wis. (WMTV) – The Waunakee Fire Department announced on Monday that there were no injuries after 18 homes were evacuated following a gas leak on Sunday night in the 600 block of Sixth Street.
The fire department was called just after 9:15 p.m. and confirmed an active natural gas leak. After confirming the leak, Madison Gas and Electric (MG&E) were requested for an immediate response.
Firefighters and the Waunakee Police Department established a safety perimeter and began evacuating people who lived on the 600 block of Sixth Street and portions of Holiday Drive between Fifth and Seventh Streets.
According to the fire department, the evacuation was completed by 9:40 p.m. and personnel arrived on the scene at 9:41 p.m. and confirmed the established isolation zone.
MG&E secured the gas supply just before 10:45 p.m. and Waunakee firefighters completed secondary gas monitoring of homes and nearby storm sewers to make sure there was no migrating natural gas remaining in the area.
People who lived in the evacuated areas were allowed to return home before 11 p.m.
The scene was turned over to MG&E for repairs to the damaged gas line, and the Waunakee Fire Department cleared the leak at 11:10 p.m.
Waunakee Police Department, Waunakee Area EMS and MG&E assisted the Waunakee Fire Department at the scene.
