Roe v Wade: US supreme court strikes down abortion rights [Glad we live in Ireland today]

  1. The dog has finally caught the car after decades of chasing it.

Next in line is contraceptives and gay marriage as the next “big issues” to tackle.

  2. It’s interesting to think if Obama had of got his appointment on the bench and then if the Democrats ran somebody other than hilary the supreme court would be overwhelmingly Liberal for decades. They could of banned guns and protected abortion rights

  3. This does not just ban abortion in red states. Many “Blue” states have enough restrictions and complications for this to mean that abortions won’t be realistically available to many who assume they are, because the volume of out-of-staters will overwhelm capacity within the time limits.

The signals are also fairly clear it won’t stop here.

America is sinking into fascism and we won’t be unharmed by the fallout. Very grim.

  4. Genuinely devastated for the country and thoroughly relieved to be Irish. For all our country’s flaws, at least I can comfortably say I’d have safe access to timely reproductive healthcare if I needed it.

  5. Glad I dont live in the States but I fear that with Americanisation this could become an issue here too in the future

  6. I was always uncomfortable with the topic of abortion and didn’t like to think about it before I moved here. I was on the fence (didn’t like abortion but wasn’t entirely keen on making it illegal) until I moved to Ireland.

I want to thank Ireland for making me firmly pro-choice. When I moved here, I learned the stories about what Irish women had to go through, and now millions of women in my country will go though the same thing. When I heard the news I put my hands in my head and wept. Living in Ireland has its ups and downs but THANK YOU to the people of Ireland for giving me a CHOICE here!!!

  7. It’s It’s terrible situation, I just can’t believe it happened. I hope this ignites mass protest and further action to fight this. I hope the people who can get pregnant take some inspiration from the national movements for liberation and civil rights in the north on ways on how to fight this.

  8. Totally irrelevant and annoyingly smug. We’ve had abortion for a couple of years and it’s limited to 12 weeks.

  9. Just think:

    – Contraception was legalised in 1985

    – Divorce was legalised in 1994 (and it was the second time for the vote, because it failed the first time)

    – Same sex marriage was only legalised in 2015

And yet, *somehow* we’re practically decades ahead of the so-called most powerful country on the planet.

When on earth did that happen?

  10. All the American money that was behind the “love both” campaign here too, I can’t believe we did it sometimes. Grateful we did,.

  11. I was seeing comments and it seems most places will still have some abortion. Wasn’t the missisipi case about stopping abortions past 15 weeks?

Are people here really in support of abortions until the kid is born?

  12. Make note of certain Irish politicians posting celebratory tweets. Peadar Tóibín saying it’s a “wonderful day for human rights and democracy”. Worrying that we continue to elect people like this.

  13. My question is was America always a shitshow? I grew up thinking it was the bee knees and somewhere id want to live. ( heavily influenced by movies and tv of course )
Ive only really tuned into politics in the last 10 years or so especially foreign wise. Was it always like this and i didnt see it or is this somewhat newish.

Of all the nuts i see online ive never met a hardcore gun loving republican and ive met many Americans in my time and have been generally sound cunts.

  14. It’s so sad this backwards shithole is supposed to be leading the world. You can’t get an abortion but you can take your gun to school, fucking mental.

  15. They are going to have to remove the word United from the countries name. Should just called it “The States of America” because they are just becoming more and more divided.

  16. Scrolling through Twitter and seeing an overwhelming amount of people saying they support the overturning and that they’re happy womens rights are stripped away in the name of God.

    Absolutely insane
