Parthenon marbles should never have been removed, Boris Johnson wrote – In 2012 letter to Greek official, then London mayor said that ideally the sculptures would have stayed in Athens

  1. The UK will never give them back. They’ve been pirates and looters since the 1500s, and they will never change.

  2. It’s hilarious that people think the UK is the only guilty party of this. Every Western country which carried out colonialism is guilty of this. We all know why the UK is singled though…

  3. This isn’t surprising. And I bet Boris genuinely believes it still. And would, if it was his choice alone, be happy to return them. He’s known as a huge fan of Greek history and along with politics it’s been his life’s passion.

But for political reasons, he can’t. The British establishment as a whole would likely love to return the marbles, but they can’t do it because of precedence. It would open up an absolute shitstorm that would spread geopolitical turmoil for the U.K.

It wouldn’t just stick with the marbles. It wouldnt even just stick with artifacts in the British museum. It would spread to the Falklands. It would spread to Gibraltar. It would trigger people making serious frothing at the mouth demands for colonial reparations.

It would, in short, be a diplomatic fucking nightmare. And it would tie up the UKs foreign policy for generations.

Much easier to just ignore the issue. Especially considering every single country is guilty of the same sort of thefts against their neighbours so nobody has a moral high ground.
