today i checked out of curiosity how much will the 9 euro ticket cost the Federal Goverment

apparently the expected costs for these 3 summer months are around 2.5 billion euros, which the federal government has to give to transport associations in order to make up for revenue shortfall

**extending it for the entire year would cost 10 billion euros(ok,maybe more ,as running costs during winter months are probably higher)**

but even if it costed 12 billion euros a year would not be an extreme cost for the federal goverment

obviously, cheap transportation will not solve all problems with public transportation in Germany, since investments and improvements to the network need to be made

but i consider the total yearly cost to be decent compared to the improvement in quality of life it can offer to citizens

what is your opinion?

  1. I think it would be a big step in the right direction, that said, I doubt those in power will agree to make the lives of the unwashed masses so much easier, since like in the US there are a bunch of neoliberall asshats in government that never shut up about no free handouts, earning one’s own living, blabla.

Also the DB at this point just needs to die or be reposessed by the state. They’ve run a world-renowned system into the ground and are proud of it, all the while constantly demanding more money from their customers and more subsidies from the government.

  2. In my perfect world, public transport would be free at point of use and funded through taxes or something similar to the Rundfunkbeitrag. I don’t necessarily think that should be done at the federal level though

  3. I think something like that is needed.

It’s the first ticket that breaks the dumb system of different “Verkehrsbetriebe” which all have their own tarifficing system, which makes it complicated every time you travel to another city.

9€ would be a bit too cheap and wouldn’t fund the public transport system.

I think a ticket that works like the 9€ Ticket but at 30€ – 50€ a month or alternatively 2-3€ a day would be a perfect. If such a system would come, i definetly would sell my car.

  4. Yes. Make it something like the GEZ, make it 25€ / month if you want. And with “we are not forced to act like a company thats oriented for revenue so we can finally bring some infrastructure to the areas that don’t have it.”

  5. Ideally, we’d have permanently free-at-point-of-use public transport. The major uptake on even the current time-limited, partial solution shows that this is necessary and wanted. But we also need to invest in upgrading the infrastructure – certain areas will require more frequent journeys and some lack the required infrastructure altogether.

Not to mention that, at that point, with the government paying fro infrastructure and tickets, there’s really no reason to keep a bunch of profit-oriented companies mooching off of our transport network.

  6. Honestly it depends.

Since the 9 euro ticket has been introduced, its caused soo many delays. Every time, I attempt to take a train somewhere, there are too many people, the train cannot leave and polizei come and have to force people off the train…
I am happy they introduced it to kind of make life a tiny bit better for people…but I think the better idea would have been to apply these savings to things like food/gas….
