Hello, I’m moving into a new apartment and I’m looking for fiber optic Internet. I went to orange as I found the best offer but they ask 300€ for the installation; However, there is fiber in the building and in my living room I have a little white box and after some research I found out that this is what I need but there is no cable and Orange said that this little box has to have some green cables or I have to pay all the installation price. As I’m not an electrician and I don’t know much I need help from somebody to tell me If I can have fiber without any installation or not. Thanks in advance

Essentially, you have a small optical fibre cable going from that box to another white box that has standard ethernet ports (to which you connect your fritzbox/modem).

Shop arround. Some provider might be willing to waive the installation fee or charge much less than 300€.

  2. Having to judge using only a photo I can’t guarantee that the white cable is in fact connected to the fiber installation in your basement, but chances are you only need a media converter box (about 30 €) that converts the optical signal from this box to an electrical one so you may be able to continue to use your old modem.

There are also newer modems that have an optical input so you don’t need the media converter.

  3. Your apartment is already cabled up to the distribution box, but it doesn’t have the [ONT](https://www.google.com/search?q=fibre+ont&hl=en&sxsrf=ALeKk01o9slULrY8TJkCGzYgujnze1yfqQ:1629067371924&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjBxpLwjLTyAhXN8qQKHQITCLYQ_AUoAXoECAEQAw&cshid=1629067388596117&biw=2550&bih=1321).

Also you can tell Orange to fuck off, they’re awful. https://www.internet.lu/en/internet/offres_2.html has free installation for example.

Also I’ve noted that lately they are installing routers with fibre ONT integrated – if you want your own router you need to tell them to install their generic ONT.

  4. In general Orange is known to entice customers with attractive looking prices but they cut corners on quality of service and customer support.

AutoMod has linked resources regarding internet service providers (and the topic has been discussed many times before) but in general the recommendation is to stay with the main companies which are Post, Tango, or Visual Online (which is basically owned by Post but has better offers depending on what you want).

Personally I used to be with Post and was quite happy with the service, and I’m now with Visual Online as they had a better offer and I’m also happy. Not really any notable difference in the quality of service between the two.

Otherwise you can also check out the recommendations other people have given in this thread and in past threads. The one thing I would recommend you do though is whichever company you’re looking at, look at reviews (for example Google reviews on maps). And that applies not only to internet service providers. If you look at reviews for Orange Luxembourg for example, you’ll see that many people are unhappy.
