The PlayStation Store is finally embracing local pricing in Latin America. Yet, the Sony marketplace will use higher-than-average exchange rates for digital games. Consequently, the GTA 6 pre-order price for the physical boxed version could be more affordable.
Sony may be giving buyers in some regions more reason to mourn the demise of physical games. The company informed customers in Latin America that PlayStation Store pricing will change on August 20th. Unfortunately, the shift to local currencies threatens to drive up the GTA 6 PS5 price and the cost of other digital titles.
Different currency, worse deals?
Previously, in countries like Mexico and Honduras, the PS Store listed prices in USD. Responding to criticism from consumer advocates, offers should become easier to understand. However, the listed exchange rates are far from ideal.
Using Mexico as an example, available wallet funds would convert at a rate of 20.50 MXN per $1 USD. The average is 17.50 MXN per dollar, resulting in a higher total cost for digital games. On the other hand, it’s possible that Sony will include VAT taxes before checkout to offset the difference.
Gamers in various parts of the world have called for dynamic pricing on the PlayStation Store. Unlike Steam, it often doesn’t account for the lower purchasing power of Latin American buyers. Recently, shoppers have seen personalized discounts, but they aren’t universal. To their frustration, the impending adjustments may not help stretch budgets further.
Another physical gaming advantage
Regardless of the exact cost, physical games are likely to remain popular. Sony’s marketplace is not as dominant in many regions as it is in North America. Even though the Rockstar title uses the code-in-box format, it encourages competition for pre-order sales. As experienced in France, GTA 6 PS5 prices are already reduced for boxed copies.
Impacted followers who prefer the digital format may want to act ahead of August 20th. The GTA 6 release date does not arrive until November 19th. That said, given the franchise’s immense popularity in Latin America, some fans are happy to pay a premium.
As it displays prices in its domestic currency, Brazil is not affected by the PS Store changes. Still, before Rockstar confirmed a lower price, a survey revealed that 33% of gamers would pre-order the standard edition for $100.
