US Vice President JD Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance have welcomed their fourth child, a baby boy named Alec Neel Vance, making him the first sitting US VP in more than 150 years to have a child while in office.

Alec was born on Sunday morning, July 19, at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. JD and Usha Vance shared the news in a joint statement.
The birth is a rare moment in American political history. The last sitting US VP known to have a child while in office was Schuyler Colfax, whose son was born in 1870. Before him, Vice President John C. Calhoun welcomed a son in 1829.

Alec is the couple’s fourth child and third son. They also have two sons, Ewan, 9, and Vivek, 6, and a daughter, Mirabel, 4.
JD and Usha had announced in January that they were expecting another son. Their previous child was born in December 2021, when JD Vance was running for the US Senate from Ohio.
JD, 41, became the third-youngest person to serve as US vice president. The Second Lady, born Usha Bala Chilukuri, is the daughter of Indian immigrants and was raised in California. Her family comes from the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.
JD and Usha met while studying at Yale Law School and got married in 2014.
