Boris Johnson ‘hasn’t lifted a finger’ to solve rail strikes, says Keir Starmer

  1. 12 years of tory rule but these strikes are somehow labours fault when the government have literally done nothing to sort out this issue, they haven’t even had one meeting with mick lynch

  2. >While Johnson repeatedly sought to condemn Starmer for not having “the gumption” to prevent Labour MPs supporting the RMT union and joining picket lines at the first of three scheduled rail strikes on Tuesday, Starmer said this was a clear attempt to deflect any responsibility.

That’s a really weird attack line. He’s leaning over the despatch box yelling at a Labour leader “lol your MPs support striking workers” as though that’s a bad thing.

It’d make a far better line to point out that the obvious fencesitting in Starmer’s position. He says Johnson should act to end the dispute, but he also says he doesn’t support the RMT. So how is Johnson to resolve the dispute? Set the dogs on them?

  3. The Government are the ones who control the rail companies’ purse strings, and they are the ones who are choosing to ensure that rail workers are facing the choice between accepting a massive real terms pay cut or going on strike.

If you’re annoyed that you can’t get a train, remember that Boris Johnson and Grant Shapps could have avoided this strike if they’d wanted to.

  4. Really Kier? Bit rich coming from a Labour leader who told his front bench not to stand on the picket line.

Also don’t hear him talking about an actual solution either. Critism is all well and good if you put forward your own solutions.

I’d love to vote the Tories out but there’s no viable alternative.

  5. Well of course not. He and the Tories are very happy about them, they are meat for their propaganda, and a distraction from all the corruption.

  6. Well I know the Government subsidise the rail network, but they do not actually own the companies, they are leased on contract by the Government and therefore it is the companies job the run them without Government interreference

  7. Johnson’s voters want to see a solution in the form of crushing the unions, not helping the workers. It is Starmer’s supporters that will want to see him show solidarity with the unions and oppose the companies they work for. As much as I loathe Johnson, I never expected him to do anything to stop these strikes because I know how he feels about protests and strikes. I doubt the strikers themselves are holding their breath when it comes to intervention from No 10 too.

  8. so a tube train driver can earn between £48,000 and £70,000 and it’s the governments fault because they won’t use YOUR money to pay them even more ?? sure

  9. But surely he can have them arrested for disruptive protesting? I thought that was the law now.

  10. PM does nothing. Accused of not lifting a finger to stop the strikes.

PM gets involved. Accused of meddling in a private industrial dispute.

It’s a piece of piss being in opposition. No responsibilities, just say I’d have done it better.

  11. They’re your strikes though /s

He’s hoping for Labour to faceplant into the wall over this. Plus it works as a distraction.
