Romania has joined the growing list of European countries formally backing the autonomy initiative proposed by Morocco to resolve the Western Sahara issue. Bucharest maintains that the proposal by the Kingdom represents the most serious, credible, and realistic basis for reaching a lasting and mutually acceptable political solution.
In a message addressed to King Mohammed VI, Romanian President Nicușor Dan formally expressed his Government’s backing for the Moroccan project from the Presidency of Romania:
“We consider that the autonomy plan presented by Morocco in 2007 under its sovereignty constitutes the most practical, viable option in accordance with the parameters set by the United Nations to achieve a fair and definitive political solution.”

According to the Romanian Head of State’s Office, this decision follows an exhaustive review of the conflict’s evolution and Bucharest’s commitment to align its foreign policy with the dynamic consensus within the European Union and the international community.
The letter was delivered directly to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, by Dacian Cioloș, presidential advisor and former Prime Minister of Romania. During the bilateral meeting held in Rabat, Cioloș underlined the strategic value of this rapprochement:
“Our position reflects a deliberate shift towards explicit and constructive support for Moroccan diplomacy, in the interest of stability in North Africa and the Mediterranean.”

For its part, Moroccan diplomacy welcomed the announcement as a significant milestone on the European stage. Representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Morocco highlighted after the meeting:
“This step by Romania confirms the consolidation of an irreversible trend in Europe, where an increasing number of nations recognise that autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the only pragmatic framework offering real guarantees for the future.”
Bucharest’s declaration falls within the intense diplomatic offensive deployed by Rabat in recent years, consolidating a wave of European and international support that views the 2007 proposal as the only viable pathway to definitively resolve this regional dispute.
