Howard Morgan, co-founder of quantitative investment major Renaissance Technologies and global venture capital firms First Round Capital and B Capital, has joined the global advisory board of Campus Fund.Campus Fund is a Bengaluru-based fund that invests exclusively in startups led by students, recent graduates and college dropouts. Morgan, an early backer of tech companies such as Uber, Roblox and Notion, brings more than four decades of experience in technology and early-stage investing. The appointment comes as Campus Fund deploys its third and largest fund, a $100-million corpus announced last year. The firm plans to back as many as 60 startups over four years, writing initial cheques of Rs 1 crore to Rs 8 crore.Morgan’s association with student entrepreneurship dates back to 2012, when First Round launched the Dorm Room Fund in the US. The student-run fund was created to identify and back founders building companies while still in college.Campus Fund, founded by Richa Bajpai in 2020, was built around a similar idea for India. The firm said it evaluates more than 7,000 startups annually through a network of over 100 student scouts across college campuses.“Having the pioneer of the student-founder fund model on our global advisory board is both a validation of what we have built in India and a bridge to where we are going,” Bajpai said.“Great founders are everywhere. I have seen it on campuses across America, and I see it now across India,” Morgan said. “India’s young builders are working on deep tech, space and climate at a scale and ambition that is impossible to ignore.”Campus Fund’s portfolio includes space surveillance startup Digantara, reusable rocket maker EtherealX and electric aircraft startup Sarla Aviation.
