    I’m not going to comment on her parenting skills and what she may or may not have done but I grew up a few miles from the Welland and was in my early 20s when Rikki was murdered. *Everyone* knew the Welland was a sink-estate. It and a couple of other estates were where the council dumped all the problem families and it was somewhere you didn’t go unless you really had to. As far as I know she was a local and would have been well aware of the Welland’s reputation although she may not have had much choice if that was all the council would offer her.

  2. Being innocent of murder doesn’t make you innocent of neglect. Having a broken elbow doesn’t make you innocent of neglect. Having a shitty start in life and picking bad partners doesn’t make you innocent of neglect. Pleading guilty to neglect and having that plea accepted and not appealing does make you guilty though.
