These 2 things don’t add up. Denmark is one of the most expensive countries in the EU but their government has been able to make their capital city into one of the most liveable cities in the world. Seems like a fair trade up. Ireland is also one of the most expensive countries in the EU but our capital city is no where near as liveable as Denmark’s. Why do we put up with this and why do people continue to vote for the same parties when they’ve clearly been doing a fairly poor job over the years. Just shows how inept our government is and has been over the last 30 plus years. We need to start looking at other countries in Europe, and figuring out how they’re succeeding in certain areas, while we’re failing. https://www.irishexaminer.com/business/economy/arid-40900418.html
Every city is assigned a rating for relative comfort for over 30 factors across five general categories: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure. https://www.euronews.com/next/2022/06/24/vienna-named-the-worlds-most-liveable-city-these-five-european-cities-also-made-the-top-10

“But SF did X decades ago”- them
Denmark is livable because they evict brown people from their homes when theres too many in the one neighbourhood

Denmark also has a very high rental rate compared to home ownership so I’d imagine it’s well regulated rather than gouged by rent farming politics.
Denmark is more socialist more of their high taxes go properly back into society to support a citizen they favour collectivism and i am sure their government is smarter with the money. While Ireland does have a pretty good social services we still favour more capitalism and individualism but also we seems like we keep forgetting that Ireland was pretty poor not that long a ago we have a lot of catching up to do it still makes sense Ireland not being high on global liveability index, our public transport is still very poor, our hospitals, our health care services are poorly run Ireland in some ways is still developing process
Irish people like to emigrate to Canada, US, and OZ. If course because they’re English soaking countries. But when it comes to European countries, not too many choose Denmark….
It would be interesting to see what drives the scores at the top levels
I’d like to know what the average Dane’s take home salary is compared to Ireland. If it’s as good or higher, I may consider a move over there for a year or two. I’ve always wanted to go there but could never justify the expense.

Their streets look really clean and they’ve loads of streets with very nice tiles/cobbles, much better cycling infrastructure and public transport, their buildings in most of these areas look well kept and have some lovely architecture too. Probably far less/no skangers in the actual centre as well. Very few streets around Dublin city would appear as nice as theirs, the place is just so badly developed, designed and maintained in comparison and the antisocial issues are gone beyond a joke
Maybe it shows how inept we are as a public in demanding better from our politicians. Maybe that’s the crucial difference.
“Why do we put up with this” you ask. Have a look a the comments on several threads in this sub. The level of denial that somethings are really gone wrong is so high that no wonder it does not translate to any public pressure to improve. To every point raised on the sheer lack of quality and accountability, there are people shooting it down with “it’s not bad”, “it’s all ok” etc. Either cause it doesn’t affect them or they simply are ignorant and like their heads buried in the sand. To solve a problem, the first step is to realize there is one. We are not even there yet.
I use to live in Copenhagen and I liked it and all but honestly it’s not this “perfect” city that people imagine. It’s actually quite drab in a lot of regards. One thing that really annoyed me there as my then bf lived in a commuter town and I lived in a suburb and we’d meet up in city centre was that it was very hard to find a restaurant that was just nice and casual and affordable. Nightlife was really exciting there but again it was hard to find just nice pubs that weren’t very old man pubs or full on dressy trendy bars. Also the same with political views, people seemed to be hard left or hard right. My best friend there is a super liberal Pakistani guy but amount of abuse he got was unreal inc being denied entry into places. Of course it happens here too but the racism and occasional homophobia was just more in your face & unapologetic I guess. Also making new friends there was difficult & when I got robbed there I found it very hard to get assistance from anyone such as a lend of a phone to contact my then bf. I ended up having going to his parents house and sitting in their kitchen (lucky I was pretty close to them and they never locked their door). Very much “not my problem” . Anyway my point of writing this is Dublin defo needs investment and an overhaul but there is good points to it too. Also random note but at least in 2019, going out, food shopping & transport were roughly the same. Haircuts, restaurants and red tape / tax stuff was more expensive. Rent really depended. I feel it was around the same if slightly more expensive but quality was way higher. Not as many shit holes. Also Dane’s are the “happiest” my arse, they complain as much we do. They are also way blunter than we are which positives and negatives. You can definitely feel a lot of our Protestant stereotypes come through there. They’re not religious but definitely very “Protestant work ethnic” type people & similar solo mindset too
