General Classification Standings after Stage 17
The great move on today’s stage came from breakaway specialist Jordan Jegat. Whilst the TotalEnergies did not gain positions, he gained almost nine minutes on his direct rivals through another breakaway exhibition, where he was the only member of the GC men who made it in a group of several dozen riders.
After this performance he has solidified his ninth place, now carrying over 10 minutes of lead ahead of the even more surprising Yannis Voisard who may bring Tudor into a maiden Tour de France Top10. The battle for this position will be interesting over the coming days, with only a few minutes of lead over Ilan van Wilder, Richard Carapaz and Davide Piganzoli.

The fight for the green jersey is perhaps the tightest of the Tour. Mads Pedersen won the intermediate sprint and looked to play his cards perfectly on today’s stage. But Jasper Philipsen had a perfect finale and so the Dane’s gap has been cut further.
Philipsen effectively won the stage whilst Pedersen, even in a reduced group, sprinted only to eighth on the day. The lead has evaporated into a mere 7 points, meaning it can change hands via the stages’ intermediate sprints over the coming days. The two teams are now in charge of the classification, with Biniam Girmay missing out on the breakaway today and being unable to score.

Although it featured several climbs, the points system rendered today virtually meaningless in the outlook of the KOM classification. Valentin Paret-Peintre and Richard Carapaz were unable to score points that would allow them to close down on Tadej Pogacar in any meaningful way.
The yellow jersey also has 70 points in this classification, against Paret-Peintre’s 46 and Carapaz’ 40.

The youth classification has remained the same today, with the three candidates for victory arriving together at the finish. Isaac del Toro will go into the final block of mountain stages in the lead, carrying 20 seconds over Paul Seixas, 2:31 minutes over Juan Ayuso and 5:59 minutes over Lenny Martínez.

Lidl-Trek may have dealt the decisive blow against UAE Team Emirates – XRG this Wednesday. On stage 4, the German team gained 39 minutes on UAE, and the Emirati team worked through the gap over the past few weeks to bring it down to only a few seconds on stage 16.
But with the breakaway dynamics on stage 17, the gap has been extended back up to 18 minutes. Derek Gee and Quinn Simmons joined Mads Pedersen at the head of the race whilst UAE had only Nils Politt. The combined times meant that the peloton’s time loss of 8:46 minutes might have cost UAE the chance to win the classification.
