Russia’s Gazprom Threatens to Cut Off Gas to Moldova

  1. I’m as against dependence on Russian gas supplies as I think you can reasonably get, but I still think that payment is due for goods and services rendered. If Moldova consistently can’t pay for the gas then the government needs to reach some kind of solution.

It would help if Russia wasn’t actively destabilizing the country; I have a hunch Moldova might do a better job of paying its bills without Russia propping up Transnistria and continually interfering in Moldovan politics. So it’s not like Russia’s completely in the clear here.

  2. Just a reminder that a new Russian offensive in Ukraine could have big consequences for Moldova as well.

  3. Devaluation. The Leu has been way overpriced since 2018.

And devolve and decentralize the gas monopoly.

Time for a Moldovan Wealth Fund. And local control of pricing and supplies and distribution.

Likely that both power and gas are being subsidized to the benefit of local oligarchs – with the price being paid by workers and peasants.

[ Edit: If the Moldovans really want to put a bee in Gazprom’s bonnet, start up dozens of biodigesters for towns, villages, and farms.

And put in high quality methane collectors.

    Same with food waste facilities.

And begin to develop subsurface methane storage and injection sites, so that methane can be bought at a deep discount when the market is depressed – as it was in early 2020 ]

  4. I know the MT is not really pro-Russia, but their choice in headline is a bit confusing.

    Choices

“Russia gonna freeze and kill millions of Moldovans”

    Vs

“Moldovans refuse to pay for gas they ordered”

Moldova can solve this problem by paying.

  5. The article:

    >”The deadline for current payments is November 22… today, Gazprom notified the Moldovan side that in 48 hours gas supplies to Moldova will be stopped in accordance with the contract,” Kupryanov said.

    The title:

    >Russia’s Gazprom **ThReAtEnS** to Cut Off Gas to Moldova

The choice of words, regarding Russia, in most western media, is always something like that.

  6. Always good to be reminded Moldova isn’t some country they made up for a movie about an American who finds out they are actually a princess and they have to move to Moldova and become Queen.

  7. Hmmm I’m starting to think it wasn’t such a good idea for us to build a new pipeline to Russia.

so glad the CDU won’t be in the new government tbh
