Prosecutors today sought to detain a National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) professor incommunicado after he was accused of fatally stabbing his brother-in-law earlier this month.
The 43-year-old suspect, surnamed Lin (林), had completed treatment at a hospital while under police guard before being turned over to prosecutors for questioning, the Hsinchu District Prosecutors’ Office said.
On July 14, Lin’s brother-in-law, a 48-year-old man surnamed Chi (紀), was stabbed dozens of times, with fatal wounds to his neck, at the musical instrument store he owned in Hsinchu City.

Lin was shot four times in the thigh by police at the murder scene after he allegedly refused to surrender and raised a knife at officers, the Hsinchu City Police Bureau said, adding that he was transferred to hospital in police custody.
Medical personnel found Chi unresponsive at the scene and he was later pronounced dead.
It was determined that Chi died from hemorrhagic shock caused by excessive blood loss, prosecutors said.
The stabbing likely stemmed from a dispute over the division of Lin’s wife’s family assets, prosecutors said.
Lin is suspected of domestic violence under Article 2-1 of the Domestic Violence Prevention Act (家庭暴力防治法) and homicide in the context of domestic violence under Article 271-1 of the Criminal Code, prosecutors said.
Prosecutors today petitioned the Hsinchu District Court to detain Lin incommunicado, citing the seriousness of the alleged offense and concerns that he might flee or collude with witnesses.
Lin, a Taiwanese-born US citizen, is a professor in NYCU’s Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering, specializing in semiconductor engineering and electronic components.
