Proposed EU pesticide cuts could threaten potato growing in Ireland

  1. Potatoes aren’t native to Ireland. They’re from Peru. The English Lord who controlled Ireland at the time decided to plant it there because he liked the taste.

  2. Availibility of fungicides is a bigger issue here, we’ve a great climate for growing plants but unfortunately things like blight thrive here too.

Bonus fact: Milk and potatoes is a virtually nutritionally complete diet. Prior to the famine we were some of the healthiest and best fed people in Europe, especially compared to countries where grain was the staple foodstuff.
