Gabriele Mini won the Formula 2 Sprint Race at the Hungarian Grand Prix, and got closer to Nikola Tsolov in the drivers’ standings, after the Red Bull junior crashed out.

Thanks to this result, Mini is now 16 points behind Tsolov in the Formula 2 title race. Ferrari junior Rafael Camara finished fourth and now trails the Bulgarian by 31 points.

After participating in FP1 for Cadillac earlier this weekend, Colton Herta finished in 14th place.

As it happened

Sebastian Montoya retained the lead from pole position at the start at the Hungaroring. Behind him, Tsolov immediately piled the pressure on championship rival Mini through the opening corners, but the young Italian managed to hold on to second place.

During the first half of the race, the drivers focused on tyre management. Mini stayed close to Montoya, while Dino Beganovic remained within striking distance of Tsolov, but neither driver was able to make a move stick.

On Lap 17, Mini took the lead into Turn 1 after the Colombian locked up.

Four laps later, Tsolov also attempted to overtake the son of Juan Pablo Montoya into Turn 1, but the two made contact and were both forced to retire from the race. Over the team radio, the Colombian described the incident as “interesting.” That promoted Beganovic and Laurens Van Hoepen into the podium positions.
