Bucharest ordered the diplomat to leave within five days after investigators linked wreckage to Russian drones. The move signals tougher airspace enforcement.

In Romania, a diplomat from the Russian embassy was expelled following drone incidents that violated the country’s airspace. He has been ordered to leave Romania within five days, and the country has declared him persona non grata.

The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced this.

Today, the Russian ambassador to Romania was summoned to the MFA headquarters. There, fragments of one of the drones that had been shot down in Romania were shown to him. According to the investigation, this drone is indeed Russian.

The MFA also summoned the Romanian ambassador to Russia to Bucharest to discuss the drone incidents.

Context and Consequences

Since the start of the large-scale war in Ukraine, Russian drones have breached Romania’s airspace 33 times. During this period, more than 100 attacks were recorded near the Ukrainian–Romanian border.

In 2026 alone, Romania scrambled its aircraft 34 times in response to attacks on Ukraine.

These steps demonstrate Romania’s firm commitment to defending its airspace and a strong focus on border security.
