Get off the forecourt now,” shouts Dima, 65, an attendant at a petrol station on the main road into Pavlohrad, in Ukraine’s eastern Dnipropetrovsk region.
As the air raid siren wails, he points to an app on his phone tracking Russian drones — now an essential tool for those working on the country’s increasingly dangerous petrol station forecourts. An arrow is moving across the screen.
“It’s a Russian Geran-3 drone heading in our direction,” he says. “They missed us yesterday, but they are coming back for another try. You must leave immediately.”
Russia has intensified its assault on Ukraine’s retail fuel network over the past month, striking ordinary roadside stations across the east and south of the country.

Polish police have arrested two men suspected of carrying out a violent assault on a Ukrainian couple in the city of Wroclaw, as authorities continue to search for a third suspect.
The attack took place on Sunday when a 20-year-old Ukrainian woman and her 21-year-old partner were allegedly beaten by three men in what police believe was a nationality-motivated assault.
Polish interior minister Marcin Kierwiński said both detained suspects had previous criminal records, with one apprehended by counterterrorism officers while attempting to leave the city.
“Brutal violence will never go unpunished,” Kierwinski wrote on X.
Ukraine’s foreign minister Andrii Sybiha welcomed their “swift, decisive, and immediate response” in a social media post following the arrest.
He also urged Polish politicians to avoid rhetoric that fuels hostility towards Ukrainians, warning that such language can contribute to violence.
The incident comes amid a reported rise in hate crimes against Ukrainians in Poland. According to Polish daily Rzeczpospolita, police received 180 reports of hate crimes targeting Ukrainians in the first half of 2026, more than 30 per cent higher than during the same period last year.

Volodymyr Zelensky will land in the United States on Tuesday where he will attend the funeral of late senator Lindsey Graham, who championed stronger sanctions on Russia from the US.
The Ukrainian president is also expected to meet separately with Donald Trump at the White House.
On Tuesday evening, all 100 members of the US Senate have been invited to a meeting with Zelensky, two Senate aides said.
One of the aides said the Senate could begin voting during Zelensky’s visit on a bill to impose sanctions on Russia that was championed by Graham.
Lawmakers eased the tariff level in the legislation to 100 per cent from a blanket 500 per cent included in a previous version of the bill in order to win support.

Us president Doanld Trump has said he would directly speak with Russian president Vladimir Putin about reports that Moscow has been helping Iran target US assets in the Middle East.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Monday, Trump was asked about allegations raised by Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, who said Russia had provided Iran with satellite imagery of US and Gulf military installations during the recent conflict.
Zelensky said Kyiv had observed a “clear correlation between Russia’s satellite imagery of these sites and Iranian strikes.”

“We’ll find out if that’s true,” Trump said. “I’ll ask Putin about it. We’ll find out.”
Trump downplayed the potential impact of any such assistance, arguing that it had not changed the outcome of the conflict.
“It hasn’t had much impact because we’ve knocked the hell out of (Iran),” Trump said. “Look, you know, (Russia) gave Venezuela a lot of equipment. Venezuela had all Russian equipment. How did that work out? Not too good.”
He also said he was sceptical that Russia had provided meaningful support to Iran.
“I don’t think they’ve been doing it. Certainly not at a high level, and if they have, it has been very unimpactful,” Trump said.
Zelensky’s allegation came as Ukraine attacked an Iranian tanker in the Caspian Sea that Ukraine’s ambassador to Israel, Yevgen Korniychuk, said was carrying drones and military components from Iran to Russia. Iran condemned the strike and vowed to retaliate.

All 100 members of the US Senate have been invited to a meeting on Tuesday evening with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky when he is in Washington for the funeral of late Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, two Senate aides said.
One of the aides said the Senate could begin voting during Zelensky’s visit on a bill to impose sanctions on Russia that was championed by Graham.
The legislation had been pending for about a year before Graham’s sudden death this month. It is meant to cut revenues from the sale of Russia’s energy for its war on Ukraine.
Lawmakers eased the tariff level in the legislation to 100 per cent from a blanket 500 per cent included in a previous version of the bill in order to win support.
However, the bill has spiked concerns in Congress about potential new powers for Trump.
