Rage across Europe as Covid lockdowns and curbs trigger riots

  1. >Europe on Sunday night faced an increasingly violent backlash against new Covid restrictions imposed to deal with a record number of new cases on the Continent.

    >Riot police were forced to use water cannon and tear gas as peaceful demonstrations turned violent in Brussels when tens of thousands of protesters marched through the streets against the measures.

    >They smashed the glass at the entrance to a European Commission building after young men in hoods attacked police vans with baseball bats.

    >It followed a second night of disorder in the Netherlands on Saturday over the introduction of new coronavirus restrictions, where police opened fire on the crowds, wounding at least four people.

    >Demonstrations also took place in Austria, Italy, Croatia, Denmark and Switzerland over the weekend amid clampdowns on civil liberties by European governments to curb a steep increase in the number of infections that are putting healthcare systems under strain.

    >On Sunday, Austria’s interior minister warned of increasing “radicalisation” among the population, days after it was announced that three anti-lockdown protesters had been arrested for setting a police car on fire in an attempt to burn an officer.

    >Europe is experiencing a worrying surge in the number of coronavirus cases. On Sunday, France reported 19,749 new infections, a 58 per cent jump from a week ago. Gabriel Attal, a government spokesman, told reporters that the “fifth wave is starting at lightning speed”.

    >The unrest increased debates in Germany and other European countries about the possible introduction of compulsory immunisations, with low vaccination rates prompting fears a new wave of infections could once again cripple the Continent.

    >As Europe endured fresh violence, in Britain, Sajid Javid insisted that no such measures were necessary, saying he hoped that people can “look forward to Christmas together”.

    >The Health Secretary played down the likelihood of tougher curbs being introduced in England despite cases surging on the Continent.

    >Mr Javid said the “one big difference” between Britain and parts of Europe where coronavirus is soaring is the UK’s vaccine booster programme.

    >“It’s the most successful of Europe,” he told BBC One’s Andrew Marr Show on Sunday, adding it is “absolutely key for us to keep this virus at bay”.

    >The UK has completed 15 million booster doses, with 25 per cent of over-12s covered.

    >**He also highlighted that the UK “made a tough decision back at the start of the summer” to open up, while “other countries didn’t follow our course”.**

  2. This is the time we need a ***really*** dangerous pandemic or epidemic that actually kills fast and easy, without any possibility of curing or vaccinating against it.

Because people need to understand how stupid and lucky they are. Those idiots would have been amongst the first to die of the plague, the English sweat or the Spanish flu.

  3. We better not see any lockdowns or plan B’s here in the UK. I am strongly pro vax and I was vaccinated as soon as eligible. I supported the governments previous lockdowns but we were told vaccines were our way out of this, stick to our guns now. More unvaccinated people are dying, it is not for the rest of the population to stop their lives for those so selfish. I don’t believe in restricting anti vax peoples freedom either.

Allow everyone who wants a booster to get one, supply is no longer a bottleneck. We have had 0 restrictions since July, a high number of cases for months (deaths low in comparison to the peak). If we haven’t got enough antibodies in our population (~93%) now, then we may as well call it a day.

Hoping to see this awful Tory government stick to their plan for once.

  4. I’m so happy to not live in a big city where COVIDIOTS gather.

Also, how bored this people are to go and protest? Don’t they have anything more fun to do instead?

  5. To be honest, I understand anyone who’s p*ssed with having to go into yet another lockdown. I’m also pissed about it.

It is just that I blame all these un-vaccinated dickheads for it, not the state which was, if anything, too much appeasing for too long to people who don’t care what they do to others.

  6. When did we loose the 19?

Covid is just runny nose, cough, sore throat… a cold from a ubiquitous class of pathogen.

Covid19 and its variations are the novel strain that we thought might be the new plague last year.

Wouldnt want to confuse the two.

  7. You know, I was doing everything that was required and more from the start of the pandemic. Masked (properly), distanced, stayed at home, volunteered in the testing stations, and when hospitals were overwhelmed – volunteered in the Covid units (butt-wiping, waste disposal and fat people rolling over mostly since I’m not a doctor), got the vaccine as soon as it was available… Now I’m pissed and I’ve lost all faith in my government and it’s mostly because of the vaccine passports.

They did nothing for the vaccination rates here, they made the vaccination seem “forced” and they divided the society. The vaxed hate the unvaxed, and the unvaxed are not willing to submit and get the shot because the other half of the society calls them plague rats and who the hell wants to listen to people that hate, mock and patronize them? How is this helping anyone? And most restrictions are back now plus with talks of lockdown in the pipeline. At the same time they are considering closing down more local hospitals – adding even more strain on the medical system.

And a month from now in Lithuania the “booster” shots will be mandatory if you want to get your covid pass (it’s valid 6 months from your last vaccine). So I’ll become a member of the “plague rat” class because I was vaccinated quite early (due to volunteering in the hospital). And even the WHO does not recommend boosters for everyone https://www.who.int/news/item/04-10-2021-interim-statement-on-booster-doses-for-covid-19-vaccination

I’m pissed and tired. The restrictions keep piling on even if you are doing everything that was required. The rules keep changing. Recommendations and suggestions become mandates and you access to basic services can be restricted at any time with a stroke of the pen. There is no clear plan or timeline when the Covid pass will be removed/abolished. The parliament does not vote on the restrictions, but we have a commission, that is free to make any changes they like due to the “emergency situation”. I feel that this is fundamentally undemocratic and wrong. I feel like a frog in a slowly boiling pot. I feel like I’m loosing my freedom. And I want to protest and riot.

  8. I mean for most people it should be time to sit down and really think about it, of course they could just completely end the lockdown and all restrictions but then I would suggest for vaccinated patients to get a preferred treatment in hospitals because if you decide to go unvaccinated and accept that you are going to really suffer if you get a Covid infection that is your choice and you accept the consequences of not getting vaccinated

  9. I am strongly PRO vaccine and strongly ANTI lockdowns and restrictions.

I have done everything I have been asked to do, over the last 2 years I have spent over 2 months in quarantines which is almost 10% of my time, if not for my profession being exempt from quarantine in the UK I would have spent closer to 5 months. After the third quarantine I’ve said “no more”, I am fully vaccinated, I will take my booster when available but I refuse to accept any more restrictions or quarantines and I will do everything to avoid/skirt them.

Fuck anti-vaxxers but also fuck lockdowns, quarantines and lockdown fetishists.
