President Donald Trump called into Fox News on Tuesday morning to sing a song of tariffs to the sycophantic crew. He defended his fetish for affordability-killing tariffs by doing what he does best: saying crazy things and lying.

“It’s bringing hundreds of billions of dollars,” he told an anxious Brian Kilmeade, a co-host on “Fox & Friends.” “I was at General Motors yesterday. They have the best year. They have the most trucks, the most cars. The tariffs have saved General Motors.”

In reality, GM said a week ago that the tariffs would deal a blow of up to $3.5 billion to its bottom line. Worse, everyday Americans are unlikely to see any of the tariff refunds that the Trump administration is being forced to pay out.

Former President Joe Biden also did more for American autoworkers and the industry as a whole, bringing back thousands of jobs that were lost amid Trump’s mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Of course, Trump didn’t stop there in praising his tariffs.

“I stopped eight wars—I would say five of them because of tariffs,” Trump continued. “The threat of tariffs stopped India and Pakistan from going into a nuclear war.”

Why tell just one lie when you can tell one ginormous lie—and tell it repeatedly?

Republicans, scrambling to salvage their midterm prospects, have launched a campaign defending the administration’s cost-increasing tariffs, which disproportionately punish nonwealthy Americans. While Trump and his fellow Republicans focus on trying to mislead the public that their policies are working, reality does not lie, and costs continue to rise as a result of failed conservative policies.
