Finland’s pink ‘singles basket’ grocery store dating trend explained

  • 2026-07-29

Forget swiping left or right or putting on your cutest outfit for your next bar or club outing, because singles in one progressive country can now look for love somewhere between the produce section and the cereal aisle.

Prisma, one of Finland’s largest grocery chains operated by S Group, has captured the internet’s attention with bright baby pink shopping baskets designed specifically for single people.

It is called Sinkkukori (Finnish for “single basket”), and the concept is actually quite simple: shoppers picking up a pink basket at the store entrance serve as a subtle, open signal to fellow shoppers that they are single and are open to striking up a conversation.

The quirky dating strategy recently swept social media after travel and cultural content creator Roya Fox posted a video from inside one of the stores detailing the phenomenon.

Finnish supermarket enacts a new way for locals to find love

Speaking about her viral discovery, which racked up over four million views on TikTok, Ms Fox revealed she didn’t just stumble onto the baskets by accident, but she was introduced to them by a local guide.

Ms Fox claimed her tour guide, called Mirka, took her to a grocery store because they are a “great window into a country’s culture”.

Knowing Ms Fox’s love for eccentric local traditions, Mirka pointed out the stacked Sinkkukori near the entrance.

“She knows that I love quirky cultural things since that’s what a lot of my content is based on, so she brought me over to show me the baskets and explained what it meant,” Ms Fox told news.com.au.

“I was immediately fascinated and decided to spontaneously do a video on the spot.

“It’s just such a unique thing, and I’d never seen something like that before.”

Her video sparked massive engagement online, with viewers debating whether grocery store matchmaking could work in their own countries.

For those unfamiliar with Nordic social norms, Finland is famously known for its quiet, private public culture, which is a concept often illustrated by viral photos of Finns standing meters apart at bus stops to respect personal space.

Ms Fox sees the pink basket as a clever solution tailored to that national temperament.

“From what I understand, Finnish people tend to be more introverted culturally and keep more distance with strangers,” she noted.

“So I see it as more of a cute way to encourage communication and connection in a country where people tend to be more shy.”

Ms Fox believes the desire for real-life connection spans far beyond Finland and thinks the baskets are a “fun initiative” that should be adopted by other countries.

“I saw some people in the comments suggesting that bookstores try it, for example, and I love that idea,” Ms Fox shared.

“In general, people are tired of swiping on a phone screen to find love. They want ways to be less online and connect with people organically and out in the wild.”

When asked whether traditional night-life dating has lost its charm, Ms Fox argued that “no one really aspires to be asked out at a bar”.

“It’s way more fun to connect with someone over a mutual interest or hobby, like at a museum, bookstore, or running group — or grocery store — than at a bar,” she explained.

For many, carrying a pink basket turns a routine errand into a storyline straight out of a movie.

“People want to romanticise their lives, and everyone loves a meet-cute,” Ms Fox added.

“They want a story to tell at their wedding, something with more whimsy than a bar.

“Meeting at a grocery store is fun because it sparks the imagination and feels like the start to a romance novel or Hallmark movie.”

While the video brought international spotlight to the idea, Sinkkukori isn’t entirely new to Finnish retail.

Supermarkets like Prisma — sprawling hypermarkets that sell everything from fresh produce and rye bread to electronics and clothing — have experimented with singles’ baskets for several years in select locations (such as Espoo and Helsinki) as cheeky icebreakers.

The concept operates on strict mutual consent: carrying a pink basket signals that you’re happy to be approached, but shoppers are only meant to initiate conversation with others holding the same coloured basket.

While some locals treat it as a lighthearted joke, and others confess to grabbing one by accident purely because they liked the colour, it remains one of the most uniquely Finnish attempts to make everyday life just a little more romantic.
