Finnish national grid operator Fingrid will discontinue maintenance of its fiber optic connection with Russia, public broadcaster Yle reported, marking another step in unwinding infrastructure links between the two countries on July 30.
Fingrid said the fiber-optic line scheduled to be disconnected had been leased to a telecommunications operator. The lease is now expiring and will not be renewed, meaning the connection is no longer needed.
Electricity transmission over the line has been suspended since 2022.
The disconnection is scheduled for the end of the year. Fingrid said ending the connection is unlikely to affect telecommunications between Russia and Finland.
Earlier reports said Finland temporarily restricted traffic in the Gulf of Finland in July 2026 because of a drone threat.
