Croatia’s Chief Fire Commander, Slavko Tucaković, has issued an urgent appeal for caution as the country faces an intense heatwave, soaring temperatures and prolonged dry conditions that have dramatically increased the risk of wildfires.
Tucaković warned that the current weather has created ideal conditions for fires to ignite and spread rapidly, meaning even the smallest spark could have devastating consequences for people, property and the environment.
He urged residents and visitors to avoid lighting fires outdoors, burning garden waste or using any open flames that could trigger a wildfire. Citizens have also been asked not to discard cigarette butts, glass bottles or other items that could ignite dry vegetation.
Firefighting units across Croatia remain on full alert and are closely monitoring the situation, but the Fire Chief stressed that preventing wildfires depends on the responsible behaviour of every individual.
Anyone who spots smoke or a fire is urged to immediately contact the fire service on 193 or the emergency services on 112.
With much of the country under extreme heat warnings, authorities are reminding everyone that extra care over the coming days could help prevent potentially catastrophic wildfires.
