Emma Thompson facing backlash for fat suit in new ‘Matilda’ film

  1. Ffs this is getting tedious. The backlash for shit like this is normally from one or two obscure twitter users who then get picked up by the tabloids looking to cause another culture war.

  2. The real travesty is anyone thinking we ever needed a new Matilda film after De Vito’s masterpiece – and that’s not even hyperbole. It is a straight up classic.

  3. I also saw Matilda in the west end, sorry to break it to you but Trunchball is played by male actors…….

  4. There’s two sides to this, in one sense I agree (although I don’t think it deserves backlash, really)… find somebody who already suits the role, yeah. However… speaking as someone who is pretty big… wouldn’t it feel a bit horrible if you were cast for the role mainly because you were fat? I can understand when it comes to a certain race or LGBTQ demographic, but this just strikes me as odd.

edit: yes, I expected to be downvoted upon admitting I’m pretty big, ha

  5. The news these days is more about getting clicks for advertising than actually informing people, gotta wonder how much is just certain key words inserted into titles to get clicks.

  6. I’m not even sure calling her “fat” makes much sense based on Dahl’s description of the character.

But if they got a big butch athletic woman to play her there’d probably be complaints about that too.

  7. This is fucking stupid. It’s acting. What’s next? Outrage at any historical films lacking the actual historical actors? Or Star Wars lacking actual sith and jedi actors?

It doesn’t even look bad. It looks natural and it’s part of the character. What’s next? attacking actors for putting on bulk because it deprives muscle bound people from roles? If so, Dwayne Johnson would be utterly fucked.
