Siemens Mobility, together with ELSITEL and IMSAT, has been awarded three railway signalling modernization contracts in Romania. The projects include the modernization of approximately 560 km of railway infrastructure, covering 66 stations, 122 level crossings and over 2,000 signals. Advanced signalling and interlocking technologies will enhance railway safety, operational efficiency, capacity and sustainability across several key Romanian rail corridors.

Siemens Mobility, as leader of a consortium formed together with ELSITEL and IMSAT, has been awarded three major contracts for the modernization of railway signalling and interlocking systems in Romania. The contracts were awarded through competitive public procurement procedures by Romania’s railway infrastructure manager CFR SA. Together, the three contracts have a total value of approximately EUR 308 million and form one of the most comprehensive signalling modernization programs currently underway in Romania.

In total, the projects include the modernization of signalling infrastructure across approximately 560 kilometres of railway lines, including 66 stations, 13 centralized operation centres and 122 level crossings and more than 2,000 signals.

“Rail is essential for Romania’s sustainable mobility future. These three projects will modernize critical signalling infrastructure across the country, improving safety, increasing network capacity and enabling more reliable rail services for passengers and freight. Together with our partners ELSITEL and IMSAT, we are proud to support the digital transformation of Romania’s railway network,” said Marc Ludwig, CEO of Rail Infrastructure of Siemens Mobility.

The projects cover railway sections and stations within the Cluj, Timisoara, Iasi and Galati regional railway branches. They will replace aging signalling infrastructure that has significantly exceeded its designed operational lifecycle. Existing electrodynamic and mechanical interlocking systems, some dating back several decades, will be upgraded with modern signalling and traffic management technologies, improving safety, capacity, reliability and operational performance.

“Siemens Mobility is ready to support CFR Infrastructura in the delivery of advanced electronic command and control systems, at SIL 4 safety integrity level, thereby contributing to the modernization and digital transformation of Romania’s railway network. The award of these projects reflects the solid expertise and dedication of the teams that have contributed to this success. Many thanks to all those who made this result possible,” added Emil Voinea, CEO of Siemens Mobility Romania.

In addition to increasing operational performance, the projects support Romania’s and the European Union’s objectives to strengthen rail transport as a sustainable mobility solution. By enabling more efficient and reliable rail services, the modernization program will help encourage the shift of passenger and freight transport from road to rail, contributing to long-term decarbonization goals.
