>The duties of this role would include travelling to various locations throughout the country in your own vehicle, therefore using more fuel and having to change your insurance policy to allow for business use, therefore costing the worker more money.
Seems like they are going to make use of IR35 changes, so that they can hire employees for tax purposes, but without rights who also have to buy their own tools, insurance (non deductible) and also not be able to unionise.
It’s a shame trade unions slept on it, but it has been a law for quite some time so it is too late.
I mean… everything in the article is to do with money, if indirectly. The proposed efficiency improving/cost saving measures by the government are what’s resulting in the staffing cuts and implementation of new, broader job roles.
Fuck me sky actually reporting facts and not government talking points. Wonders will never cease. Shame the let shapps get away with spouting utter shite every time he pops up.
Nothing wrong with wanting more money. That’s why you work.
There was an email going round from a meeting with questions and answers with this technician role, it worked out the new ‘assistant technicians’ would be adding an extra 21000km on their own vehicles. If this was worked out on 1500 assistant technicians, it would mean 31,200,000km a year, increase of 7154 tonnes of carbon emissions.
Cost to an assistant technician who would need to use their own car is roughly an extra £2500 a year just on fuel. Then there is the west and tear to the car and possible repairs etc.
Driving is one of the biggest risks in the railway industry for on track workers due to fatigue. These proposals just show Network Rail don’t give a toss about the workers.
If anyone is not in a union yet I’d like to say that you can join online from the Trade Union Congress website. Start associating together to protect your rights as a worker.

635k a year. That’s just one of the senior management team.
Why are people not up in arms about a useless squad of execs who are running these companies into the ground.
